Biography
Rachel Stein is Scholarly Engagement Librarian for Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Programs at Tulane University Libraries. She provides research support and develop the libraries' print and digital collections for: Africana Studies, Anthropology, History, Jewish Studies, Middle East and North African Studies, Native American Studies, and Political Science. In addition to her work as an academic librarian, Rachel is a cultural historian of medieval and early modern Spain, Portugal, and their empires. She holds a Ph.D. in Latin American and Iberian Cultures and is an affiliate faculty member of the University of Virginia's Rare Book School and The Brooklyn Institute for Social Research. Before pursuing an academic career, Rachel lived in Madrid, Spain, for five years, where she worked as a copy editor and translator and taught dance classes at night. Since 2020, Rachel has been a co-organizer of Tulane's White Anti-Racist Learning Community (WALC), a group focused on creating space for white people to learn about, unpack, and work
to dismantle white supremacy in themselves and on campus.
