Biography

Janel is an accounting and finance professional with 31 years of experience. Not only is Janel well-versed in financial analysis and modeling, but she is a seasoned leader with excellent management and communication skills.

Early in her career, Janel led the circulation team of the New Orleans Publishing Group for eleven years. This privately held firm published City Business, New Orleans Magazine, Louisiana Life, Saints Gameday Program, the fishing and hunting regulations for the State of Louisiana, and numerous contract publications for clients, including the New Orleans Museum of Art and the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce. During her tenure at NOPG, Janel was promoted to Vice-President of Marketing and Distribution in recognition of her innovative financial modeling, marketing, promotion, and database management skills, which helped the firm grow to a dominant position in the market, publishing over four million copies of their newspapers and magazines distributed across New Orleans, the State of Louisiana, the United States, and globally.

Janel's entrepreneurial spirit guided her to venture independently and purchase Bouquet Boutique Florist. Shortly after, she and her team purchased their closest competitor, Nosegay Floral Designs. They combined the two storefronts in a more prominent location on West Esplanade in Metairie and since have become one of the area's fastest-growing retail florists.

Under Janel's leadership, Nosegay's sales team has generated over ten million dollars in gross sales, significantly growing this full-service florist's presence in the market. Janel also led the conversion of the customer database to an integrated point-of-sale application that coordinates sales, production, and delivery while providing New Orleans' only real-time floral delivery receipt to customers, along with a photo of the bouquet delivered.

Janel was thrilled to join the financial management team at Tulane in 2017. Janel's work has been highly praised by faculty and staff alike. As the Senior Accountant in the Dean's Office of the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Janel works closely with the Assistant Dean for Finance, providing analysis and projections. She offers daily oversight of the administrative and financial activity within the school and assists with human resources and payroll activity. Janel assists in reviewing financial transactions within the school and has approval authority for all routine financial transactions in the absence of the Assistant Dean.

Janel interacts with the Department Administrators to obtain budgetary information, resolve budget matters, and develop projections. Regarding grant applications, she assists in coordinating the proposal process, including developing and reviewing proposed budgets. Janel is a liaison between the Dean's Office and other offices within and outside the university, including Human Resources, the Controller's Office, Sponsored Projects, and Materials Management. She supervises the Logistical Support Unit when the Assistant Dean is out of the office and works with the Assistant Dean on training support staff and PIs in the school on financial and administrative processes and procedures.

Janel is also an active volunteer at Tulane. She served a three-year term on the Staff Advisory Council, where she was a member of the Senate Budget Review Committee and chaired the Community Service Committee. Janel was elected to the newly formed SPHTM Staff Council last spring and led the school-wide retreat for staff members, which was a great success. She is working on the agenda for the fall retreat scheduled for the last week of October.

Janel has been the Advisor for TUSTEP, the Tulane University Service-Dog Training and Education Program, since December 2019. TUSTEP is a student service organization with 481 members that focuses on raising assistance dogs in conjunction with Canine Companions® and United States Veterans Service Dogs. An avid dog lover supporting animal rescue, the former TUSTEP advisor sought Janel out for this role, which she is honored to serve.

When she's not working or volunteering on Tulane's campus, Janel, and her husband, Jay, enjoy boating and leisure time with their four children at their home in Pass Christian. They also enjoy travel, particularly their annual ski vacation with their family.
